I would very much appreciate any guidance on how to get the SQL statement / definition query to work, and thoughts on why it runs fine in an outside console but not in the ArcGIS Python window. No idea if it's an ArcMap version thing, but apparently the quotes were the answer.

Is my problem that it's a set not a list? Or am I just trying to do it wrong? I tried building the query using Query Builder on a different ArcMap install (10.3), and it inserted quotation marks where the other install's Query Builder had not (10.2), making the query 'Roll Detail Extract1.FIX-LGL' LIKE 'Section 80' and it works. A message appears that indicates which feature layers have had their definition queries replaced. In the Feature Layers list, check the check boxes next to the feature layers for which you want to update the definition query.
